Troy Parrott has finally ended his summer transfer saga, joining Real Betis on a deal worth €20 million.

The Dubliner joins the La Liga side after three years in the Netherlands, with the last two spent at AZ Alkmaar, where he scored over 30 goals in all competitions last season as the side won the Dutch Cup, qualifying for the Europa League.

But now he moves to a side in Betis that is in the Champions League this upcoming season. It is the first time the Seville side has been in Europe’s top competition in 20 years, qualifying after finishing fifth last season under the former Premier League winner Manuel Pellegrini.

In a short statement, the Spanish club confirmed the move and a bumper five-year deal for Parrott. ‘Real Betis Balompié and AZ Alkmaar have reached an agreement for the transfer of Troy Parrott.

‘The Irish international striker becomes the newest signing this summer and has signed a contract until 2031.’

Troy Parrott landed in Seville earlier on Thursday afternoon and was greeted at the airport by a group of Real Betis fans, some waving toy parrots as the Irish striker was presented with a club scarf.

He then headed to the club to complete the deal, reported to be €16 million up front to AZ, with a further €4 million in add-ons. This is a much lower price than what was being reported earlier in the window, with the price reportedly set at over €30million.

However, Parrott made it clear he wanted to leave AZ in search of an exciting opportunity; there’s none bigger than Champions League football in a hugely creative side featuring the likes of Isco, Pablo Fornals, Antony and potentially Dani Ceballos.

With Betis’ famous green and white striped shirt, there’s truly no reason for Ireland fans not to love this move.
