Robbie Keane’s new job has been confirmed after he left his last managerial job.

The former Ireland international resigned from Hungarian side Ferencváros after winning a domestic cup and reaching the Round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League.

This, as well as his successful first managerial job at Maccabi Tel-Aviv, made him a prime candidate for a job back in the UK, and it looked like he was in pole position to get the job at his former club, Celtic.

The Dubliner reportedly had talks with the side and was all lined up to become the new boss at the Scottish Champs, but a string of backlash and an open letter from Celtic fan groups unhappy with bringing Keane in due to his experience in Israel seemingly scared off the Hoops board from hiring him.

The Glasgow side decided to bring Martin O’Neill back once again for this season. Crystal Palace were also considering Robbie Keane to replace Oliver Glasner, but ultimately decided to bring in French boss Pierre Sage after his impressive spell with Lens.

However, Robbie Keane will still have a presence in UK football as he has now been confirmed as one of the pundits on Match of the Day.

Keane is part of a new lineup of regular pundits on the UK football staple, along with Toby Alderweireld, Robbie Keane, Ashley Young, and Thomas Frank joining Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards, Ellen White, Steph Houghton, Danny Murphy and Ashley Williams as regulars.

Keane’s former Ireland teammate Shay Given, who has featured on the show in recent seasons, has missed out on the gig as he wasn’t announced. Martin Keown, Dion Dublin, Stephen Warnock, Nedum Onuoha and Theo Walcott are also among previous regulars who haven’t been retained.

Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan will share hosting duties once again after the trio replaced Gary Lineker last season.
