Park Rangers FC will host the inaugural Nessa O’Brien Memorial Under-12 Girls Tournament on 23 August, in honour of much-loved club member Nessa O’Brien, who passed away earlier this year after a brave battle with cancer.

The event, described by chairperson Vinny Lynch as ‘probably the biggest in the club’s history’, will see 16 under-12 girls’ teams from across the region descend on Park Rangers’ grounds for a full day of football. Kick-off is at 10am, with each team guaranteed five games, and official league referees donating their time.

Nessa, a former Park Rangers player and key figure in the women’s team, was renowned for her infectious humour, kindness, and trademark hugs. She returned to the club when her daughter Molly joined, and her passion for girls’ football helped drive the women’s setup forward. Molly has since signed for Waterford FC Women, a source of huge pride for the club and Nessa’s family.

The tournament aims to be a family-friendly day out, with Zuro mobile pizza, Butterfly Coffee, and plenty of space for spectators to relax and enjoy the games. Proceeds after costs will go to the Solace Centre, which has supported Nessa’s family, adding a strong community and charitable dimension.

Teams from Waterford, Cork, Wexford and Kilkenny, including top side Corinthians of Cork, will take part, while League of Ireland players will attend to present trophies and a special ‘Nessa O’Brien Award’ jersey.
