Roy Keane is not only giving his opinion on this year’s World Cup, but he is also giving his thoughts on the WAGs that are sitting in the stands.

Sitting alongside Gary Neville and Ian Wright on their popular show, The Overlap, which discusses all things sport, the conversation soon took a different turn.

While still talking about the beautiful game, Roy finally blurted out how he can’t stand the way the wives and girlfriends carry on at these events.

The term ‘WAG’ came to light in the British press in 2002 but really caught fire during the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Baden-Baden, Germany.

People became obsessed not just with the game but with the wives and girlfriends who were dressed up to the nines as they sat in the stands watching and supporting their partners.

Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole (married to Ashley Cole at the time), and Coleen Rooney were all over the papers at the time, and twenty years later, the WAG culture still exists- much to Roy Keane’s annoyance

The former Manchester United star opened up about one of his pet peeves and, within moments, had the lads in tears.

‘The World Cup, when all the players’ wives and families are going to the match, all the wives are in the jerseys with the players’ names on the back…WOW.’

Children is fine, but the wives and partners wearing their jerseys, with their name on the back. wow.’

Trying to construct a sentence while laughing at the Irishman, Ian couldn’t get why he had such a problem with it, stating, ‘I don’t mind that.

Looking at Ian with surprise, he said, ‘You not with me on that page? A year later, they are separated, most of them. And they’re all getting pictures, and they’re all getting pictures, and they’re pointing at a Jimmy or Johnny on the back, wow. We know who you are married to.’

For Roy, there was only one exception – Children.

He said, ‘Children is fine, the partners is ridiculous. All sitting in the same family section, I’ve got my jersey, have you got yours? I’m not having it.’

Ian tried to defend the girls by telling Roy, ‘I don’t mind it Roy… Her husband is playing and she’s proud of him and she wants to wear his shirt, it seems as simple as that.’

However, Roy simply wasn’t having any of it.

‘They only do it at the World Cup. You don’t see it at Old Trafford or Anfield every week. So what’s with the World Cup?’

‘Imagine a woman going, ‘I’m going to put a football jersey on today with my husband’s name on the back… Wow.’
