RTE viewers all shared the same complaint over the broadcaster’s coverage of Saturday night’s extensive boxing event in Croke Park.
While the national broadcaster ensured that the nation could witness Katie Taylor’s final bout in the ring, many fans were left annoyed by its disappointing undercard display.
RTE showed the entertaining clash between Paddy Donovan and Tyrone McKenna earlier in the broadcast, but missed out on a more dramatic turn of events in the penultimate fight of the night.
The heavyweight clash between Dubliner Thomas Carty and Englishman Dave Allen was left out of the coverage, leaving fans frustrated and voicing their anger.
Many ended up missing a very unique encounter as the fight was declared a no contest after Carty crashed through the ropes during the first round following a punch to the back of the head from Allen.
Carty ended up falling onto the floor outside the ring and had to be given oxygen by medics before being able to leave the arena.
One X user commented: ‘RTE coverage all over the place. Showing a Hearn interview from about four hours earlier, then Marty Morrissey outside while Allen v Carty is starting.’
Another shared: ‘A wild moment in the ring as Carty is literally out of the ring and it’s competition time on RTE.’
A third added: ‘It’s been horrendous from RTE. Skipped the intros to Donovan – McKenna. Didn’t show Carty – Allen.’
Yet another wrote: ‘Thomas Carthy fighting right now & RTE are showing Marty f*****g Morrissey!!!’
Despite the disappointment over the undercard coverage, there were no complaints when the main event got underway as Katie was serenaded by 83,000 fans in Croke Park.
The Bray Bomber came out of the blocks firing, dominating the first few rounds with ease and continuing with heaping pressure for the majority of the 10 rounds.
Flora Pili fought back in the middle rounds, but Katie still looked to be the winning fighter as it entered the closing stages.
The Wicklow woman won by unanimous decision, with two judges scoring 100-90, and the other scoring it 98-91 all in Katie’s favour as she signed off her illustrious career in style.
