Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quévin Castro has died at 25 after collapsing during a match in Portugal.

Castro fell to the ground during the first-half of Real Sport Clube’s friendly against Estrela da Amadora friendly in Lisbon on Saturday.

Medical staff from both teams rushed to the player’s aid but were unfortunately unable to resuscitate him.

Later in the day, the Lisbon Football Association (AFL) confirmed that the footballer ‘passed away this morning during the pre-season friendly’.

Real Sport Clube have paid tribute to their midfielder, saying Castro was a ‘beloved member of our sporting family’.

The club said: ‘Quévin Castro was much more than just a player; he was an integral part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on all those who knew him.’

Estrela da Amadora, the opposition side in Saturday’s friendly, also shared a statement to offer their condolences to Castro’s loved ones.

They wrote: ‘At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extends its most heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Quévin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massamá (Real Sport Clube) structure. Our thoughts are with all those close to him. Rest in peace, Quévin.’

Castro, who grew up in Norfolk in England, was best known in the football world for his time at West Brom from 2021 to 2023.

He made his debut for the club against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup and next appeared against Swansea later that season, before joining Burton Albion on loan.

West Brom have released a statement expressing that the club is ‘devastated’ by Castro’s death, with a period of applause to take place in the 25th minute of their Championship fixture against Burnley on Sunday. Black armbands will also be worn by the players.

Castro also starred for York City, Chippenham Town, Cambridge City and Eastbourne Borough in England, before moving to Portugal this summer.
