Grainne Seoige has revealed a new project she is working on inspired by her experience as a victim of AI-generated deepfakes.

A fake pornographic image was circulated on message sharing app WhatsApp during the 2024 General Election campaign.

The TV presenter had run for Fianna Fáil in the Galway West constituency during the elections, but failed to gain a seat.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday evening, Seoige noted that the image had been created to ’cause me harm.’

‘I don’t know who made it,’ she shared, ‘I don’t know how many people saw it, but I do know it was done to cause me harm, and I also know it’s still out there.

‘It still exists on people’s phones.’

The Galway woman went on to note that many other women, teenagers and children are going through the same horrifying ordeals nationwide.

‘In light of recent revelations about the dark online communities facilitating and sharing the abuse of women, and the huge numbers of men accessing sites that promote sexual violence, it just feels like we’ve reached a point where people are saying: “Enough.”‘ Grainne said.

The TV presenter went on to detail her next gig alongside Virgin Media TV — a new documentary highlighting the harm caused by deepfake imagery.

Outlining the premise, Grainne said the documentary would delve into the ‘culture that turns serious harm into a bit of craic, scandal [and] entertainment.’

In the video, Grainne concluded by issuing an appeal to people who have experienced fake pictures of themselves being circulated.
