Shane Lowry hit a shot the commentator called ‘the worst we’ve seen’ from him, but was able to scrape through into the cut in the PGA Championship.

After a very solid first round at Aronimink, Lowry had a Friday to forget as he went from tied for second to just making the cut, shooting a six-over-par round of 76 to put himself back to +4, ten shots off the lead heading into the weekend.

The course was playing tough out there for every player, including the former Open winner, and the shot that summed up his day came at the 8th hole.

The Offaly man duffed his shot completely into the water from the tee, something many spectators didn’t think would be possible that day, but Lowry showed that golf can be a cruel sport when things aren’t going your way.

The shot even got Sky Sports commentator to describe it as ‘the worst we’ve seen from Shane in his pro career’ and Shane didn’t hide his emotions. He salvaged for a double bogey and threw his putter cover on the green after the hole.

He will be joined on the weekend by Rory McIlroy, as after a poor first round, the reigning back-to-back Masters Champion surged back into contention after a round of 67, bringing him back to 5 shots off Maverick McNealy and Alex Smalley in the lead.

The course setup, coupled with the tough conditions, made good golf tough to come by on Friday, with many players, including Scottie Scheffler, criticising the pin placements, highlighting the 14th as a particularly challenging hole.

Speaking afterwards, McIlroy highlighted the setup as well, saying: ‘I think a bunched leaderboard like this, I think it’s a sign of not a great setup, I think when it’s as bunched as it is, because it hasn’t really enabled anyone to separate themselves.

‘It’s like, you know, it’s easy to make a ton of pars, hard to make birdies, and not that it’s hard to make bogey, but it feels like bogey’s the worst score you’re going to shoot on any one hole.’

With only 21 players under par heading into Saturday, Aronimink is definitely playing tougher than most fans had anticipated it would in the weeks leading up to it.

Shane Lowry will get his third round underway alongside Brian Campbell at 12:21pm Irish time, while McIlroy will be out at 3pm alongside Brooks Koepka.
