Derek Lyng has stepped down as manager of the Kilkenny senior hurling team.
Kilkenny County Board confirmed Lyng informed officials of his decision, bringing an end to his four seasons in charge of the Cats.
Lyng took over as senior manager in late 2022 after guiding Kilkenny to Leinster and All-Ireland Under 20 Championship success. During his time as senior boss, Kilkenny won three Leinster Senior Hurling Championship titles, reached the 2023 All-Ireland final, contested two National League finals and qualified for two All-Ireland semi-finals.
His association with Kilkenny hurling stretches back almost three decades. As a player, Lyng won six All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships, ten Leinster titles, five National League crowns, three Railway Cup medals and two All-Star awards.
Derek Lyng also served as a selector under Brian Cody between 2014 and 2019, helping Kilkenny win two All-Ireland titles, three Leinster Championships and two National League titles.
Kilkenny County Board Chairman PJ Kenny paid tribute to Lyng’s contribution to the county.
He said Lyng’s commitment to Kilkenny had never been in question and praised the honesty, integrity and pride with which he carried out his role.
Kenny thanked Lyng for his service as a player, selector and manager and wished him and his family every success in the future.
The process of appointing a new Kilkenny senior hurling manager will now begin.
