People across Waterford City and County are being encouraged to take part in a walkout aimed at highlighting violence against women.

Residents, businesses, students and community groups are being asked to step outside workplaces, schools, colleges and homes as part of the solidarity event.

Organisers say the walkout is intended to remember women who have been killed and to encourage discussion around domestic abuse, sexual violence and gender-based violence.

Monica Murphy, one of the organisers, said the event is designed to be both a moment of reflection and a call for further action.

She said: ‘Violence against women affects every community, and Waterford is no exception.’

Organisers are calling for greater focus on prevention, including education around respect for women and awareness of existing laws.

They are also seeking changes to how victims are supported through the court system, alongside stronger enforcement of sentences in cases involving violence or coercive control.

Ms. Murphy said the walkout is intended to encourage people across Waterford to start conversations about abuse and the support available to those affected.

People are being asked to gather outside their premises or at local meeting points across Waterford City and County as part of the event.
