Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Liam Brazil, hosted the reception for Dunmore East native Adam Sweeney, recognising his achievement as the first person from Waterford to reach the world’s highest peak.
The 22-year-old successfully reached the 8,848.86-metre summit of Mount Everest on May 20th alongside his Team Ireland teammates, Padraic O’Hora and Eanna McGowan.
Speaking at the reception, Mayor Brazil praised Adam’s determination, courage and resilience, describing him as an inspiration and a fantastic ambassador for both Dunmore East and Waterford.
The expedition was far from straightforward. The team was forced to abandon its first summit attempt just 400 metres from the top before successfully reaching the peak on a second attempt.
During his descent, Adam also faced one of the mountain’s greatest dangers after running out of supplementary oxygen, forcing him to carefully make his way through Everest’s infamous ‘Death Zone.’
Mayor Brazil said Adam’s achievement followed months of preparation, including expeditions to Aconcagua in Argentina and Ama Dablam in Nepal, as well as extensive alpine training.
Despite becoming the youngest Irish person to summit Mount Everest, Adam is already preparing for his next challenge. He plans to complete 32 Ironman-distance triathlons in 32 consecutive days across all 32 counties of Ireland to raise money for charity.
The Mayor was joined by Deputy Mayor Cllr. Jim Darcy, along with Councillors Pat Fitzgerald, Adam Wyse and Joe Kelly in congratulating Adam on his remarkable achievement.
