Met Eireann has issued a rain and thunderstorm warning covering the entire country, with the risk of localised downpours, lightning and flooding on Sunday.

The nationwide yellow warning is valid from 1pm on Sunday, August 30 until midnight. Met Eireann have said that heavy showers or longer spells of rain will become widespread from the southwest during the day.

The forecaster said some localised torrential downpours are likely, with the potential for thunderstorms, lightning and associated gusty winds.

While the downpours will be sporadic, with many areas escaping the worst, some localised flooding may occur where the heaviest rain falls.

Met Eireann has warned of possible impacts including localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility and lightning damage, with outdoor events also likely to be affected.

Forecasters said intense downpours could fall in a short space of time in places, especially across parts of Munster and Leinster. Temperatures are set to reach between 16 and 21 degrees.

Weather account Carlow Weather described the warning as bringing a risk of local downpours, noting they would be ‘hit and miss’ with many areas escaping.

Anyone heading out on Sunday, particularly to outdoor events, is advised to keep an eye on the forecast and allow extra time for travel.
