People heading to Waterford’s beaches are being urged to take extra care in and around the water as warm weather continues to draw large crowds to the coast.

The appeal follows a number of recent water-related incidents at beaches across the county, including Ardmore, Clonea and Bunmahon, which have required emergency responses.

Speaking to WLR, Lola O’Sullivan from Water Safety Ireland said people should never underestimate the conditions at sea, even when the weather appears calm.

She is encouraging swimmers and anyone taking to the water on paddleboards, kayaks or other watercraft to check conditions before setting out and to avoid entering the water if warning flags are in place.

Lola O’Sullivan is also reminding people to swim only at lifeguarded beaches during patrol hours where possible and to never ignore a red flag, which indicates that it is unsafe to enter the water.

She said changing tides, offshore winds and sea currents can quickly catch people out, leaving them in difficulty even on otherwise pleasant days.

Beachgoers are also being encouraged to let someone know where they are going before entering the water and to carry a means of calling for help if taking part in water activities away from the shore.
