A Waterford apprentice has been recognised as the ESB Networks Apprentice Network Technician of the Year 2026.

Pictured above, Ádhmhín Ní Riordáin, who is from An Rinn, received the national award after impressing judges during ESB Networks’ annual Apprentice of the Year competition, which showcases the skills and expertise of apprentices from across the country.

The competition saw participants complete a series of practical challenges designed to reflect real-life working conditions. Tasks included overhead line work, underground cable installation and smart meter installation, testing both technical ability and a strong commitment to safety.

The award was presented by ESB Networks Managing Director Nicholas Tarrant during a ceremony at the Networks Training Centre in Portlaoise.

This year’s event also marked the introduction of a new Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Mechanic Apprentice of the Year award, which was presented to Daniel Diamond from Glenealy, Co. Wicklow.

ESB Networks Technical Training and Development Manager Frank Murphy said apprentices play a vital role in maintaining and developing Ireland’s electricity network.

He said the competition recognises the skill, dedication and commitment to safety demonstrated by apprentices, while the introduction of the HGV Mechanic Apprentice of the Year award highlights the importance of fleet maintenance in supporting electricity services across the country.

The ESB Networks apprenticeship programme combines practical, on-the-job experience with classroom-based learning, equipping apprentices with the technical expertise, safety awareness and teamwork skills needed to help maintain and develop Ireland’s electricity network.

Ádhmhín’s success highlights the strength of the programme while bringing national recognition to Waterford through her outstanding achievement.
