As temperatures rise across the country, Dublin Fire Brigade is urging people to be aware of a hidden fire risk inside the home.

The service has warned people to remove mirrors and crystals from window ledges before heading out, as sunlight can be concentrated and potentially start a fire if reflected onto combustible materials.

Dublin Fire Brigade reminded the public that while an area may not be in direct sunlight at one point in the day, the sun moves – meaning a window ledge that appears safe in the morning could become a fire risk later.

The warning comes as parts of Ireland remain under high-temperature alerts, with prolonged heat expected to bring uncomfortable conditions, increased risks of heat-related illness and heightened concerns around dry vegetation and wildfire risks.

A Status Yellow high temperature warning is now in place for Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Mayo until 7am on Wednesday.

People are also being urged to take care in and around water, and to conserve supplies where possible as demand continues to put pressure on the public water network during the heatwave.
