The country is set to bask —or bake —in the sun this weekend, as the high-temperature warning has been extended.

A weather advisory for the country was issued by Met Éireann earlier this week, with the forecaster warning that temperatures could soar to the high 20s—and, in some cases, the low 30s.

A yellow weather warning for heat was issued for 12 counties on Thursday afternoon, but Met Éireann included a 13th county on Friday morning.

The weather warning is for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford.

Met Éireann has said that maximum temperatures could exceed 27C, while overnight temperatures aren’t expected to fall below 15C.

Potential impacts of the warnings include water safety issues due to the increased use of lakes and beaches, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, heat stress, and the possibility of forest fires. The warning came into effect at 1 pm on Friday and will remain in place until 7 am on Sunday.

Looking to the forecast for the rest of the weekend and into next week, Friday is set to be a very warm — if not hot — day for most of the country. Dry for most, with hazy sunny spells, and a huge difference in highest temperatures, ranging from 21C to 29C, with the warmest in the south.

It will be mostly dry on Friday night with clear spells, but a few showers might develop. Cloud will build in the north towards morning, but temperatures won’t fall below 13C to 17C generally. A little cooler in the north.

Dry and sunny for most of the country on Saturday, with the odd shower possible. Highest temperatures of 22C to 28-29C, but cloudier in the north and northwest with highest temperatures of “just” 17C to 21C.

Saturday night will be another dry one, with long, clear spells for most. Cloudier, however, in the north with isolated showers. Temperatures won’t fall below 13C-18C.

Sunday will see more dry, sunny weather, but again, cloudier up north; a few stray showers are also possible. Highest temperatures of 22C to 29C, coolest on the east coast.

While the east has gotten the best of the heat (or the worst, depending on who you ask) this weekend, it’s set to cool off as the heat moves west into next week.

Met Éireann added that things will be very warm or hot on Wednesday and Thursday, with temperatures expected to reach the low 30s locally. The nights will remain warm and muggy, with some thundery showers possible.

Things are expected to trend back toward average from Friday through next weekend.
