A new competition aimed at encouraging the next generation of farmers has been launched in West Waterford.

The New Entrant to Farming Award has been established by Clonmel Credit Union in partnership with West Waterford IFA and South Tipperary IFA to recognise people who have chosen a career in agriculture despite ongoing challenges facing the sector.

The competition is open to new entrants across all areas of farming, including livestock, tillage, breeding, horticulture and agri-tourism.

A prize fund of €5,000 will be awarded to the overall winner, while the runner-up will receive €2,000.

Chair of West Waterford IFA, Mark Connors, says the award aims to encourage more people to view farming as a rewarding and sustainable career.

He says that while fewer young people are returning to farming, it has created opportunities for ambitious new entrants to build successful farm businesses.

He added that West Waterford has a proud farming tradition and the award recognises those investing in the future of agriculture and rural communities.

Michael O’Grady, Head of Lending at Clonmel Credit Union, says supporting new entrants is an investment in the future of rural Ireland.

He says every person who chooses farming helps sustain local jobs, families and the wider rural economy, adding that access to finance is an important part of helping farm businesses grow through investment in land, machinery, buildings and environmental improvements.

The award is open to both full-time and part-time farmers. Applicants are asked to demonstrate a clear vision for their enterprise, embrace modern and sustainable farming practices, and show experience in the day-to-day management of their business.

Entries close on August 31st, with shortlisted applicants to be interviewed by an independent judging panel. The winner and runner-up will be announced in September.
