A new community allotment project has officially opened in Tramore, providing local residents and community groups with a dedicated space to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The allotments, located at Riverstown Business Park in Crobally Upper, have been developed on land leased from Waterford City and County Council. The project received €80,000 in funding through the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Community Recognition Fund 2024.

The site features 48 individual growing plots, fully accessible raised beds, rainwater harvesting, composting facilities and shared gardening tools.

Several plots have been allocated to local organisations, including Tramore Revive, the Marine Drive Residents Association, Tramore Men’s Shed and Grow It Yourself (GIY), helping to promote community involvement and sustainable food production.

The official opening was performed by Mayor of the Metropolitan District of Waterford, Cllr Lola O’Sullivan, with music provided by the Barrack Street Concert Band.

As well as providing space for residents to grow fresh produce, the allotments will host workshops focused on sustainable living, biodiversity and climate action.

All available plots have already been allocated for the current growing season, although applications are now being accepted for the waiting list.
