Waterford Sinn Féin TD Conor McGuinness has challenged Government Chief Whip and Waterford Fianna Fáil TD Mary Butler to a public radio debate on Irish unity.

The call comes after a Dáil debate on Sinn Féin legislation aimed at beginning preparations for any future constitutional change.

Mr. McGuinness said the Government supports Irish unity ‘in words’ but is unwilling to prepare for it in practice. He said Sinn Féin’s proposals, including a Green Paper, a Citizens’ Assembly and structured public engagement, would allow people to make an informed decision should a referendum on Irish unity take place.

The Waterford TD has now invited Mary Butler to take part in a live radio debate on the issue.

He said the people of Waterford deserve to hear why Fianna Fáil opposes what he described as practical planning for Irish unity, adding that he would make himself available at a time that suits Deputy Butler.

Mr. McGuinness also criticised the Government’s approach to constitutional change, arguing that reconciliation and cross-border cooperation are important but should not replace preparations for any future referendum.
