Fenor National School has received conditional planning permission from Waterford City & County Council for a significant new extension that will provide dedicated facilities for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The approved development includes the construction of a modern single-storey ASD unit featuring two specialist classrooms, a central activities room, a multi-sensory room, a resource room, an office, staff facilities and a connecting corridor linking the extension to the existing school building.
The project also includes the creation of a purpose-built sensory garden and safe hard and soft play areas, providing students with outdoor spaces designed to support learning, wellbeing and sensory development.
Additional works will include roof-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, a new car parking area and supporting site infrastructure, with the extension connecting to a wastewater treatment system previously approved under an earlier planning permission.
Waterford City & County Council granted permission on 15 July 2026, concluding that the development is in keeping with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. The approval is subject to six standard planning conditions covering construction hours, environmental protection, site management and compliance with the approved plans.
The investment represents an important step in expanding specialist educational provision in the region and reflects the growing demand for inclusive learning environments that support children with additional educational needs.
Once completed, the new ASD unit will provide modern, purpose-built facilities designed to enhance both educational opportunities and student wellbeing, ensuring Fenor National School can continue to meet the needs of its growing school community.
Construction can proceed once the statutory planning appeal period has expired and the final grant of permission has been issued.
