Offshore island communities across Ireland are set to benefit from new roads, upgraded piers and improved slipways after the Government announced a €3.7 million investment in infrastructure projects.

Rural and Community Development Minister Dara Calleary said the funding will support a range of capital works on islands including Inishbofin, Clare Island, Sherkin and Tory, with projects such as road resurfacing, coastal protection works, helipad upgrades and improvements to piers and slipways.

The funding forms part of the Government’s commitment to supporting offshore island communities and improving essential infrastructure for both residents and visitors.

In addition to the €3.7 million capital allocation, a further €1 million has been announced to support community development organisations serving island communities.

The funding is intended to help those organisations continue delivering local services and projects, while also supporting future planning and development initiatives.

Announcing the investment, Mr. Calleary said it demonstrated the Government’s commitment to delivering on its Our Living Islands policy.

‘This investment in our island communities demonstrates the Government’s commitment to implementing Our Living Islands, the Government’s policy for our islands’ he said.

‘The capital works programme supports essential upgrades and repairs to basic infrastructure and improve access for island residents and visitors alike’.

Among the projects receiving funding are repair works at Roonagh Pier in Co. Mayo, a key departure point for ferry services to Clare Island and Inishturk.

Mr. Calleary said he was particularly pleased funding had been secured for the pier, describing it as a vital piece of infrastructure for island residents travelling to and from the mainland.

The latest investment forms part of ongoing Government efforts to improve connectivity, transport links and essential services for Ireland’s offshore island communities.
