Visitors to Clonea Strand have welcomed the extension of toilet opening hours, with facilities now remaining open until 8pm daily following a period of shorter operating times.

The announcement was made by Cllr. Damien Geoghegan on social media, where he confirmed the change, which has been welcomed by members of the public.

The move comes following a significant increase in visitors to Waterford’s coastline and beaches over the past month, with the recent spell of good weather bringing large numbers to popular seaside locations.

Many social media users welcomed the decision, while some called for a further extension of opening hours, saying increased visitor numbers highlight the need for beach facilities to remain available later into the evening during the summer months.

The issue of beach services has also been raised separately at Waterford City and County Council, with concerns expressed over lifeguard coverage at Clonea Strand during the summer season.

Cllr. Niamh O’Donovan, representing the Dungarvan/Lismore District, raised the matter during the most recent Plenary Meeting of Waterford Council, calling for lifeguards to be present at Waterford beaches throughout the summer.

She said lifeguards had only been on patrol at weekends during June and argued that the council has an obligation to ensure beaches are properly monitored, particularly those awarded Blue Flag status.

Cllr. O’Donovan highlighted the importance of adequate supervision at popular beaches, especially during periods of warm weather when visitor numbers increase significantly.
