Don’t be too quick to spend your small change; you could soon find a brand-new €2 coin in your wallet.

The Central Bank has released 500,000 special edition €2 coins to celebrate Ireland taking over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The commemorative design features the official Presidency emblem, with a spiral pattern representing the 27 EU member states. At its centre is a five-pointed star inspired by the European Union flag.

The coins officially entered circulation today, meaning shoppers could receive one in their change anywhere cash is accepted.

Central Bank Governor Gabriel Makhlouf described the launch as marking an important moment for Ireland as it prepares to lead the Council during what he said is a significant period for Europe.

He also encouraged the public to keep an eye out for the limited-edition coins as they begin appearing in tills, wallets and piggy banks around the country.

Tánaiste Simon Harris joined officials at the launch, saying the coin recognises Ireland’s role at the heart of European decision-making as the country takes on the presidency for the eighth time.

While the new design is expected to become a collector’s item, it isn’t just for display, it has the same value as any other €2 coin and can be spent in shops and businesses across the eurozone.

So the next time you’re handed change at the supermarket or café, it might just be worth taking a second look.
