Ex-RTE star Ryan Tubridy has revealed the moment he proposed to Dr Clare Kambamettu, hiding the ring in a very unusual spot.

Ryan and Clare tied the knot last December in an intimate ceremony at the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel in Clifden, Connemara.

But the former Late Late Show host recalled the moment he proposed to the clinical psychologist and her shocked reaction.

Speaking to Diana Bunici on her podcast, The Delusional Optimist, he said he hid the ring from her in a ‘SuperValu bag’.

He said: ‘We were in Connemara in the West of Ireland, and there’s a hotel there called the Renvyle House Hotel, which we both love. This brilliant guy in the jewellery shop in Clifton, Jonty, and I’ve been kind of surreptitiously dealing with him about rings.

‘He was the ring whisperer. He said, “I’m going to come out with a SuperValu bag.” I mean, it was all quite surreptitious.

‘She had gone out to to go for walk, because… I would like to say Clare’s like a hippie, and I’m Larry David, so we’re very different.

‘And she was like, “I went out to listen to the sea or something” – completely her.’

He said he decided to go down to the beach with Clare to ‘listen to the sea’, knowing he would propose to her there and then.

As they were listening to the waves, Ryan said: ‘I said, “Yeah, it’s great and I said, this is nice.. rocks and stones.” She goes, “Yeah, but the sea?” I said, “yeah, the sea is lovely, but it’s hard to get down on your knee to propose with the rocks.” So that’s when I did it.’

‘That kind of kick started the next chapter. Clouds gone, fun times.’

Speaking about their wedding day, Ryan said at the time: ‘It is a very beautiful feeling. We were surrounded by gorgeous people who we didn’t know, strangers in the hotel, and people who were working around the place. I got a beautiful ring organised, and the weather was gorgeous.

‘It was just an accumulation of a lot of lovely things happening, and I just decided ‘Now is the time, here we go’.’

‘It’s a very exciting time to be alive, I’m a very, very lucky man. I think it’s one of those beautiful moments where the world feels lighter and there’s a whole new adventure ahead.

‘Lucky man, beautiful day, and the future is bright.’
