Waterpark Rugby Club is embarking on a major redevelopment project that aims to transform its home into a multi-sport community hub, with new facilities set to benefit both rugby and the wider sporting community across Waterford.

Speaking on Sport Lairge, Waterpark Rugby Club Development Committee member Ronan Mulligan outlined the club’s vision to create a facility that will be open seven days a week and cater for people of all ages and sporting interests.

Among the headline developments is the completion of a brand-new all-weather 5G pitch, which will be available for community use. The club has also invested in four new padel courts, with both facilities expected to open within the coming weeks through an online booking system.

Mulligan said the redevelopment is about making better use of the club’s extensive grounds while creating opportunities for a range of sports, including rugby, Gaelic games, soccer and camogie.

The project also includes a new walking and jogging trail around the grounds, which will link into the nearby River Walk. Working alongside Waterford Sports Partnership, the club also plans to install outdoor fitness stations to encourage people of all abilities, particularly older members of the community, to stay active.

Future phases of the redevelopment include floodlights for the main pitch, a high-performance gym, expanded parking facilities and the creation of a coffee shop to establish the grounds as a social hub for the local community. Mulligan also revealed ambitions for Waterpark to become a regional high-performance rugby centre serving the south east.
While rugby remains at the heart of the club, Mulligan stressed that the new facilities are being developed with the wider community in mind.

“We want people to realise it’s a sports club for everyone,” he said, highlighting that the new facilities will be available for community groups, businesses, schools and sports clubs, regardless of whether they are members of Waterpark Rugby Club.
The redevelopment comes as Waterpark Rugby Club prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2026, with Mulligan hoping the investment will secure the club’s future for generations to come while strengthening participation in sport across Waterford.
