Waterford FC manager Graham Coughlan believes his players must embrace the pressure of Sunday’s FAI Cup Final against Derry City and rise to the occasion at the Aviva Stadium.
The Blues are preparing for their first appearance in the final since 2004, as they look to end a 46-year wait to lift the trophy.
Coughlan admits the excitement is beginning to build, with the players and staff looking forward to what promises to be a huge occasion for the club and the city.
He says the experience of playing in major finals will be important, but believes the outcome could ultimately come down to how individuals handle the occasion.
Coughlan was particularly unhappy with Waterford’s performance against Shelbourne last Friday night, feeling his side approached the game as though their league campaign was already over.
He believes the pressure of Sunday’s final can bring out the best in his players.
The Waterford manager says pressure in football is a privilege and wants his squad to thrive in the challenge rather than be intimidated by it.
He also expects a close contest against Derry, with the sides having produced three tight and entertaining encounters over recent months.
Coughlan has urged his players not to change their approach for the occasion, telling them to trust the principles and performances that have brought them this far.
His message is to enjoy the experience, settle into the game early and make the most of the opportunity to play in front of a major crowd at the Aviva Stadium.
