One of Waterford’s most unique sporting events returns this weekend as the Beat the Ferryman open water swim takes place in Passage East on Saturday afternoon.

Organised by Passage East Hurling Club, this year’s event marks the 10th running of the popular swim, which has become a highlight of the local sporting calendar. While the event has not been held ten times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, organisers are celebrating a decade since the inaugural crossing.

The swim is the only interprovincial open water swim in Ireland, with participants making the 600-metre crossing from Leinster to Munster across the River Suir.

Swim Committee Chair Jim McLean said the event continues to attract both experienced open water swimmers and those taking part for the challenge.

“We’re anxious to get as many people as possible. It’s a great event with a barbecue, teas and coffees, a raffle afterwards and plenty of picnic benches beside the community centre. It’s a great family day out.”

Because of tidal conditions on the estuary, this year’s event will take place on Saturday rather than its traditional Sunday slot, with the start scheduled for 2.45 pm.

McLean said safety remains the top priority, with support provided by the Coast Guard, RNLI crews and kayakers throughout the swim.

“We have to cap the numbers at 170 from a safety point of view, so we’re encouraging people to register early and not miss out.”

Participants must be at least 15 years of age and will be required to confirm they have previously completed a swim of at least one kilometre before taking part.

As well as the swim itself, organisers are promising a community atmosphere with food, refreshments and entertainment after the event, with WLR’s Fintan Walsh once again returning as MC.

Online registration closes at 6 pm on Friday, July 10, with entry available through the Passage East Hurling Club Facebook page. Participants should sign in at the Passage East Community Centre before the start of Saturday’s swim.
