The Barrack Street-born son of a coachbuilder went on to become closely associated with Thomas Edison concerning the development of the gramophone.

Later, Powers’ Celebrity Productions became the first distributor of Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse cartoons in the late-1920s.
Powers continued to have a keen interest in his native Ireland for the rest of his life, with his generosity and love for home demonstrated before his death.
