In 2002, Polina, aged nine, began staying with the Dunphy family in Dunhill, John and Michele, their two daughters Elaine and Jacqueline and son Michael, as part of Chernobyl Aid Ireland’s Rest and Recuperation programme.
Polina became such an integral part of the family that she started using the Dunphy surname and refers to John and Michele as her parents. She returned to Waterford to get married and is now living here permanently as she and her husband Alex raise their daughter Olivia.
WLR's Kieran Foley spoke with Polina about her new book which deals with trauma, abandonment, and poverty - but also warmth, kindness and love.
