Questions have emerged over the future of the popular Christmas festival, with Winterval Waterford concerns raised by a local councillor following a recent audit and reports from the public.
The concerns relate to the festival’s financial controls and operational structure, as discussions begin around planning for the 2026 event.
Audit highlights issues with financial controls
An audit covering the year ending December 31, 2024, identified the need for improvements in cash handling and financial oversight within the Winterval festival.
While no suggestion has been made that the event is at risk of cancellation, the findings have prompted calls for greater transparency and review.
Councillor raises questions over festival’s position
Sinn Fein Councillor Joeanne Bailey said she has received multiple queries from members of the public.
“I’ve had a few phone calls about Winterval… one particular lady asked me, ‘is Winterval in trouble?’”
She also pointed to concerns about changes behind the scenes, including the reported absence of a production company involved in previous years.
“With the amount of money and funding that this council gives towards Winterval, I’m just wondering… should we be concerned?”
Cllr Bailey suggested that councillors may need a formal briefing to clarify the situation.
Council confirms planning underway for 2026 festival
In response, Acting Director of Services at Waterford City and County Council, Sean Dobbs, confirmed that preparations for the next festival are already in progress.
“The arrangements have started for Winterval this year in terms of plans and procurement.”
He added that reports are also being compiled to review lessons learned from the 2025 event.
Future of Winterval under scrutiny
Despite the Winterval Waterford concerns, the council has indicated that work is ongoing to ensure the festival continues.
Winterval remains a key event in Waterford’s tourism calendar, attracting large visitor numbers each year and contributing significantly to the local economy.
