Waterford Libraries is inviting writers from across West Waterford to submit their work for a new literary anthology celebrating the creativity and storytelling talent of the region.
West Waterford Writes will be published for the first time this year and will feature original poetry and short stories from people who are either from West Waterford or currently living in the area.
The project is open to both established writers and those looking to have their work published for the first time.
Executive Librarian with Waterford City and County Council, Alan Butler, says the anthology will provide an opportunity for local writers and poets to share their work with a wider audience.
There will also be a special award for the best poem or short story based on the theme of travel.
The award celebrates the legacy of renowned Waterford travel writer Dervla Murphy, whose work inspired generations to explore the world and embrace new experiences.
Poets can submit up to three poems, while writers can enter one short story between 1,500 and 2,000 words.
All submissions must be original and previously unpublished, and entries can be written in either English or Irish. AI-generated work will not be accepted.
Entries must be submitted by email to library@waterfordcouncil.ie, with the subject line “West Waterford Writes”, by 5pm on Friday, September 18th, 2026.
Submissions should be attached to the email and clearly labelled either poetry or short story, with the author’s name and address included for correspondence purposes.
Waterford Libraries says the initiative is aimed at showcasing the wealth of literary talent in West Waterford and giving local voices an opportunity to reach a wider audience.
