Residents are being urged to take part in voter registration in Waterford efforts ahead of National Voter Registration Day, which takes place on Thursday, April 30th.
Waterford City and County Council is joining local authorities nationwide in encouraging people to register to vote or ensure their details are up to date.
Campaign Focuses on Civic Engagement
This year’s campaign theme, “Have your Say: How to engage with Public Representatives”, aims to highlight how political decisions impact everyday life.
Issues such as housing, transport, healthcare and local services are all shaped by public representatives, and residents are being encouraged to engage with them directly.
Mayor Urges Public to Make Their Voices Heard
Mayor Seamus Ryan said the campaign is about empowering communities across the city and county.
“It’s our democratic right to have our voices heard… we are open, and we are accessible.”
He added that councillors have a duty to represent the public and encouraged people to speak up on issues affecting their daily lives.
Deputy Mayor Highlights Importance of Participation
Deputy Mayor John Pratt also stressed the importance of civic engagement.
“Civic engagement is for everyone… it allows everyone who is eligible to vote to rightfully have a say in shaping Ireland’s future.”
He urged people who are not yet registered to act now, describing the process as quick but highly impactful.
How to Register or Update Details
Even those already on the register are being encouraged to check and update their information.
Residents can confirm or amend their details by providing:
- PPSN
- Eircode
- Date of birth
- Contact details
This helps ensure accuracy and strengthens the integrity of the electoral register.
Updates can be made online at checktheregister.ie.
Options for Young and Vulnerable Voters
The campaign also highlights supports for specific groups:
- 16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register and will be added automatically once they turn 18
- People living in nursing homes or healthcare settings can apply for inclusion on the special voters list
The council’s franchise team is also available to assist anyone needing help with registration.
Encouraging Participation Across Waterford
The voter registration in Waterford campaign aims to ensure as many people as possible are ready to participate in future elections.
With National Voter Registration Day approaching, residents are being reminded that having their details in order is the first step in having their voice heard.
