Uisce Éireann has announced the commencement of preliminary works on a major project to upgrade the wastewater network in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

According to the utility, as Dungarvan continues to grow and develop, its wastewater network is under increasing pressure. Improvements are required to ensure it can reliably meet environmental standards and support future needs. Population growth, new housing, and economic activity, together with groundwater and tidal infiltration, can place additional strain on the network during periods of heavy rainfall and high tides, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding and stormwater overflows.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne T.D, said: “This investment in the Dungarvan Wastewater Network upgrade project is about strengthening day‑to‑day life for people across Dungarvan and the surrounding communities, protecting the local environment and supporting the delivery of resilient, future‑ready infrastructure. Upgrading the wastewater network will help support homes, as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities, and also support local businesses and community facilities, while providing the capacity needed to enable sustainable growth and development in the area.”

Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, John Cummins T.D. added: “Wastewater networks are vital infrastructure – key to unlocking new housing potential and supporting strong economic growth as well as protecting our built and natural environment. This upgrade is very welcome news for the residents and businesses of Dungarvan. Alongside the recent announcement of the brand-new water treatment plant at Ballinamuck, it is a clear example of government’s commitment to investing in water infrastructure in Waterford.”

Hugh Kennedy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “These early works mark the beginning of a long‑term programme to upgrade Dungarvan’s wastewater network and improve how it performs during periods of increased demand. By enhancing capacity and resilience, the project will help reduce flooding risk, protect the local environment, and support future growth for the town.”

Site investigations and advanced sewer rehabilitation works are scheduled to begin in late May 2026 and will be carried out by Shareridge Ltd., on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Once the design phase is completed, Uisce Éireann will progress the statutory, regulatory, and budgetary approvals required to deliver the new infrastructure.

Uisce Éireann, which is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland, said: “We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
