More than 400 people have signed a petition calling for urgent action to address shortages when it comes to Tramore childcare places.

The petition was presented to public representatives at a public meeting in the Coastguard Cultural Centre last week, attended by 41 people, including a number of local parents and families.

Organiser Carrie O’Hanlon says the turnout shows the scale of concern over the lack of childcare places in the town.

A number of action points were agreed at the meeting, including political representatives raising the issue with Waterford TDs and bringing it directly to the attention of the Minister for Education and the Minister for Children.

Campaigners are also seeking a state-led childcare facility for Tramore, including the use of existing buildings that were designed for childcare but are not currently in use.

The group is also calling for improved pay and greater professional recognition for early years educators, arguing staffing shortages are a major barrier to expanding services.

Speaking after the meeting, Carrie said many families are being forced to extend maternity leave or take unpaid leave because they cannot secure childcare places.

She says the shortage when it comes to Tramore childcare options is preventing many mothers from returning to work as planned and is placing significant financial and emotional pressure on families.

Campaigners say the meeting was a positive first step, but acknowledge a long road remains ahead to secure additional childcare provision for the town.
