A Waterford TD has called for urgent intervention by the Department of Foreign Affairs to ensure Waterford man Rory Byrne detained in Croatia is granted immediate access to Irish consular officials and appropriate medical care.
Deputy Conor McGuinness has written to the Minister for Foreign Affairs after being contacted by the family of Rory Byrne, who allege he was seriously assaulted while in custody. They say they have been unable to make contact with him and are increasingly concerned for his welfare.
According to the family, Croatian authorities have informed the Irish Embassy that Mr Byrne is refusing consular assistance. However, they strongly dispute that claim and fear he is being prevented from speaking with Irish officials to conceal the extent of injuries they believe he sustained while in detention.
The family’s concerns have also been heightened by the fact that Mr Byrne has Type 1 diabetes. They say they have been unable to establish whether he has access to appropriate medical treatment or the equipment needed to monitor his condition.
Deputy McGuinness said his immediate priority is ensuring Mr Byrne’s welfare.
“The priority now must be establishing direct contact with Rory, ensuring he receives any medical care he requires, and allowing Irish consular officials to meet with him without delay,” he said.
“His family are understandably extremely distressed. Given the seriousness of the allegations, every effort must be made to independently establish his welfare and ensure his rights are fully protected.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs has been asked to intervene as concerns continue over Mr Byrne’s condition and access to consular support.
