Virgin Media presenter Elaine Crowley was amongst more than 600 women who bared all in a bid to raise money for a children’s cancer charity.

On Saturday, the Weekend AM host gathered with hundreds of ladies at Magheramore Beach in Wicklow dressed in 80s-themed rigouts, including funky wigs and glitter. The crowd braved the cold sea to raise funds for Aoibheann’s Pink Tie – the national Children’s Cancer Charity.

Over €100,000 was raised on the day of the dip, with a whopping overall figure of €1,500,000 being hit, with all funds being donated to the charity. Over 80 families were helped by the organisation in the last week alone.

The ladies managed to break a Guinness World Record for the most women in 80s gear together. Participants have already secured two records in the past.

The event’s founder, Dee Featherstone, spoke ahead of the sea swim, saying: ‘If you’ve ever needed an excuse to dust off the neon and go all out, this is it.

‘Strip and Dip is about stepping outside your comfort zone, having a laugh with like-minded women and doing something genuinely meaningful at the same time.

‘We want to see the beach back with colour, energy, and plenty of 80s spirit,’ she added.

As in previous years, a ring of steel, including gardaí and security staff, ensured the hundreds of female dippers received no unwanted attention, as they stripped down and braved the cold sea.

To date, the money raised from Strip and Dip has already supported Aoibheann’s Lighthouse in Crumlin, a respite home for families to stay in during treatment.
