Over €118,000 allocated to upgrade Waterford’s public libraries

More than €118,000 has been allocated to improve public library services across Waterford as part of a national investment aimed at creating more inclusive, accessible and digitally connected library spaces.

Government Chief Whip and Minister for Mental Health, Mary Butler TD, has confirmed that Waterford will receive over €118,000 under the Libraries Capital Programme.

The funding will support a range of upgrades, including new sensory equipment and facilities, accessibility improvements, enhanced ICT hardware to improve broadband speeds, and upgraded furniture and operational equipment.

The investment forms part of a €3 million national package announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, to support targeted small-scale capital projects in public libraries across the country.

Welcoming the funding, Minister Butler said libraries continue to play a vital role in communities by providing welcoming spaces where people of all ages can connect, learn and access services.

She said the investment delivers on the Programme for Government commitment to provide inclusive sensory spaces in libraries while also supporting digital inclusion and the objectives of the national library strategy, ‘the library is the place’.

“I am really pleased that this dedicated investment will help them improve their digital infrastructure, sensory environments, and inclusive access, guaranteeing they remain equipped to provide an essential, contemporary service to communities,” she said.

The funding is intended to help remove physical, sensory and digital barriers, ensuring libraries remain accessible community hubs while adapting to changing public needs.

Nationally, the Libraries Capital Programme 2023–2027 is investing €22.6 million in 11 major library infrastructure projects, alongside €2.6 million for 12 new mobile library vehicles.

The Programme for Government also includes a commitment to triple the number of My Open Library facilities and further enhance sensory spaces in libraries throughout the country.
