A swan was reunited with their other half over the weekend following some assistance from Gardaí.

Pictures shared online showed two members of An Garda Síochána escorting the swan from Limerick city centre back to the River Shannon.

Footage showed the Gardaí with the swan on Sarsfield Street, before the swan decided to peruse the shops on O’Connell Street.

The swan was eventually guided back to Howley’s Quay, where there is access to the River Shannon.

The river is home to plenty of swans, with one Facebook user confirming the swan was greeted with a kiss by what appears to be their other half.

The water birds typically form long-term, monogamous bonds, so it is a rarity to see them by themselves.

Limericks Word on the Street shared a picture of the swan and the Gardaí on Sunday, writing: ‘Right now Gardaí in Limerick are peacefully escorting one of the River Shannon swans back to the water.’

One person who witnessed the return, said: ‘I saw it. When the swan finally got into the river, another swan swam directly towards him and when they met, they touched beaks.

‘It was a swan kiss. AMAZING.’

Another joked: ‘Is it true that the swan went back into the river like a duck to water.’

A third added: ‘No swanning around here then!’

‘Well done to the lovely Gardaí,’ a fourth person praised. ‘One happy swan.’
