The reported purchase of a property in Waterford by Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been described as a major endorsement of the county and could increase international interest in the region.

Speaking on WLR, Regina Mangan of Liberty Blue Estate Agents said the property, reportedly known as Granby, is an exceptional home and one of the finest properties in Ireland.

She said the property underwent a major seven-year restoration project by London-based architectural firm Smallwood Architects, which has also worked on high-profile properties including Cashel Palace and John Magnier’s estate at Coolmore.

Mangan said she understood that Zuckerberg had been looking at properties in Ireland for around a year, including in County Meath, before settling on the Waterford property.

The property is located in the Blackwater area, with Mangan highlighting the landscape and surroundings as one of the major attractions.

She said Ireland’s political stability, safety, English-speaking population and lifestyle are all important factors for wealthy international buyers considering a base in the country.

The reported purchase has also been welcomed as potentially significant for Waterford’s international profile.

Mangan said the global recognition of Zuckerberg means the purchase could have an impact well beyond the property itself, describing it as “enormously important for brand Waterford”.

She compared the potential impact to the international profile Waterford has enjoyed through the Waterford Crystal brand.

According to the details discussed, the property sits on approximately 440 acres and includes extensive grounds and accommodation.

Mangan said the investment could potentially bring further interest and investment to the region, although she stressed that the property would likely be one of a number of international bases for Zuckerberg rather than his primary residence.

She also pointed to the appeal of the Blackwater and the wider Waterford region as a safe and attractive location.

The reported purchase has generated significant interest both locally and internationally, with the story attracting attention well beyond Waterford.

Mangan believes that increased international visibility can only be positive for the county’s reputation as a place to live, visit and invest.

She also highlighted the wider appeal of Ireland to high-net-worth individuals, citing lifestyle, language and location as key attractions.

The reported acquisition is expected to generate further discussion about Waterford’s growing profile internationally and the potential economic and tourism benefits that can come from having one of the world’s best-known technology entrepreneurs linked to the region.
