A Garda in his 20s was hospitalised after being knocked down by a young man on an e-bike in Dublin.

A juvenile was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident and was found to be in possession of a knife.

The incident occurred just after 5pm on Sunday at Hartstown Park in Dublin 15, with the teenager remaining in Garda custody.

Thankfully, the officer who was struck did not suffer serious injuries and has since been discharged from the hospital.

Hartstown Park has been a hotspot for concern surrounding anti-social behaviour in recent weeks.

Sinn Féin Councillor Angela Donnelly highlighted the issue in late April, putting forward a local authority motion around the rise of scramblers and e-bikes in the park.

She called for ‘at least one park ranger’ to be deployed in Hartstown Park from 5pm until it closes.

The motion was put forward in an attempt to ‘try to stop the constant use of scramblers, surrons [electric dirt bikes] and electric scooters, which has reached epidemic proportions’.

Donnelly said: ‘I’m certainly not looking for park rangers to go and tackle these lads. Rather for them to be there acting as a conduit to the Gardaí.’

Since last month, the use of scramblers in all public places has been illegal under Grace’s Law.

Last week, the Government approved further regulations to fully implement the ban on scramblers and quadbikes.

The increased calls for change followed the death of Grace Lynch in January, when she was hit by a scrambler bike in Finglas.

At last month’s Garda Representative Association (GRA) conference, Blanchardstown-based Detective Mark Ferris said: ‘The new scrambler ban is to be welcomed but many of us are asking the obvious question, how are we supposed to enforce it without being hung out to dry ourselves?

‘Grace’s Law will finally make it crystal clear that using a scrambler in any public place, including roads and parks, is illegal.’
