Questions have been raised about the future of Plunkett Station as plans progress for the new Transport Hub on the North Quays.
The issue was brought forward by Social Democrats Councillor Mary Roche at the April plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council, where she sought clarity on what lies ahead for the historic station once operations move.
Councillor seeks clarity on station’s future use
Cllr Roche asked whether there had been any engagement with Iarnród Éireann regarding the building’s future role.
She queried whether the rail operator intends to retain offices at the site or if alternative uses are being considered once the new North Quays station becomes operational.
Council: No discussions yet with Iarnród Éireann
Responding to the query, Acting Director of Services Sean Dobbs confirmed that the council has not held any formal discussions with Iarnród Éireann regarding the future of Plunkett Station.
However, he indicated that the station is likely to remain in use.
“It’s a matter for Irish Rail. My understanding is that Irish Rail will continue to use Plunkett Station for their own staff and internal works,” he said.
This suggests the building will remain active, though not necessarily as a primary passenger station.
Timeline for new station opening
Further developments are expected over the coming years:
- Construction of the southern entrance will continue this year.
- Testing, audits and approvals will continue throughout this year.
- Installation of signalling, electrical and telecom systems will run into early 2027
It is anticipated that the new station will open later in 2027, marking a major milestone in the North Quays development.
Uncertainty remains over long-term role
While the future of Plunkett Station appears to involve continued use by Iarnród Éireann, questions remain over its long-term role within the city’s transport network.
Any potential redevelopment or alternative use of the site has yet to be outlined.
