Emergency services responded to an incident on the River Suir in Waterford City this afternoon in which a person was rescued from the water.

Crews from Waterford City Fire Service, An Garda Siochana and Waterford Ambulance Station, were tasked by the Irish Coast Guard to an emergency involving a person in the water at Ford Wharf.

The person was successfully rescued from the water by crews from Waterford City River Rescue aboard the “Lenny O”.

The person was handed over to ambulance crews and transported for treatment.

In a statement, Waterford City River Rescue said: “Thank you to everyone involved and to MRCC who coordinated this morning’s incident and thank you to members of An Garda Síochána. Thank you to every one involved, to the person who called 999 and threw a life ring thank you, you saved a life today.”

The statement added: “We would like to reiterate the absolute importance of an early call to the Emergency Services for water incidents so the relevant services can be dispatched promptly. Please remember if you see anyone in difficulty on our Lakes, Rivers or Coast, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Irish Coast Guard who will dispatch the services needed to the scene, Do not assume somebody has already made that call.”
