A major boost to emergency response capabilities has been announced with the launch of the Coast Guard aviation Waterford service at Waterford Airport.

Minister of State Seán Canney officially unveiled the enhanced Irish Coast Guard aviation service, marking the completion of a transition to a new, expanded fleet operated by Bristow Ireland.

24/7 Helicopter and Fixed-Wing Operations

The upgraded service delivers round-the-clock aviation support using six AW189 helicopters operating from four bases:

  • Sligo
  • Shannon
  • Waterford
  • Weston Airport in Dublin

In addition, a dedicated fixed-wing service operates from Shannon using two Beechcraft B200 King Air aircraft.

The integrated service strengthens the Coast Guard’s ability to carry out:

  • Maritime and inland search and rescue
  • Aeromedical support to offshore islands
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Assistance to National Ambulance Service and An Garda Síochána

Hundreds of Missions Already Completed

Speaking at the launch, Minister Canney said the new contract is already delivering results.

“Since the commencement of services in December 2024, over 550 helicopter missions have been completed.”

He added that fixed-wing aircraft have carried out more than 110 missions since entering service in August 2025, including long-range medical evacuations far off Ireland’s south-west coast.

Waterford Base Plays Key Strategic Role

The Minister highlighted the importance of the Waterford base in the national network.

“Waterford Airport’s long-standing role in supporting helicopter Search and Rescue response is vital.”

He noted that the location improves response times not only along the south coast but also inland areas such as the Comeragh Mountains.

Modern Fleet Enhances Rescue Capabilities

The new contract includes six helicopters, five of which are newly built, significantly enhancing operational capacity.

The addition of fixed-wing aircraft provides:

  • Extended range for missions
  • Improved communication support
  • Capability to deploy life rafts
  • Enhanced maritime monitoring

Director of Bristow Ireland, Philip Bartlett, said safety and reliability were central to the transition.

“We are proud to support the Irish Coast Guard in shaping the future of Search and Rescue in Ireland.”

Strengthening Emergency Response Nationwide

The launch of the Coast Guard aviation Waterford service represents a significant investment in Ireland’s emergency infrastructure.

It ensures faster, more coordinated responses to incidents at sea and on land, while supporting a wide range of state services.
