The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI) officially opened a new dementia-specific Day Service at Cappoquin Day Care Centre, Shanbally, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford on June 5th, marking an important step in expanding access to vital supports for people living with dementia in their local communities.

The service was launched by Minister of State for Older People and Housing, Kieran O’Donnell TD, joined by Government Chief Whip and Minister of State with responsibility for Mental Health, Mary Butler TD alongside other public representatives and members of the local community, including people living with dementia and family carers

Susan Brennan, whose father attends the service, said it has been an absolute lifeline.

“For Dad, it provides much-needed social engagement and routine, delivered by a very caring team. For us as a family, it has given us the opportunity to meet other carers, where we can share information, experiences and supports. This service has alleviated some of the isolation that comes with living with dementia.”

Speaking at the launch, Minister O’Donnell said:

“I am delighted to officially launch the dementia-specific Day Care Service in Cappoquin, Co. Waterford. Services like this play a vital role in supporting people living with dementia and their families to remain connected and supported within their own communities. The Government is committed to continuing to work closely with the HSE and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland to strengthen and expand these essential supports across the country.”

Siobhán O’Connor, The ASI’s Head of Operations and Community Engagement, added:

“We are thrilled to open this new Day Service in Cappoquin, which will support people living with dementia and their families in the surrounding area. As more families across Ireland are affected by dementia, it is essential that we continue to provide accessible, community-based services. I would like to thank the Government, the HSE, and especially the community in Cappoquin for their support and warm welcome in helping to ensure The Alzheimer Society of Ireland had a lovely home, making this service possible.”

The ASI provides a range of services in Waterford, including Day Care, Daycare at home, Home Care, a Memory cafe, and a Dementia Advisory Service.

Approximately 64,000 people nationwide are currently living with dementia.
