Bike Week Waterford 2026 has officially been launched, with a wide range of cycling events planned across the city and county from Saturday, May 9th to Sunday, May 17th.
Organised by Waterford City and County Council in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA), the annual initiative aims to promote cycling as a fun, accessible and healthy activity for people of all ages and abilities.
Wide range of events across Waterford
This year’s Bike Week Waterford 2026 programme features a diverse mix of activities, including family-friendly cycles, workshops and guided tours.
Among the highlights is the Waterford Greenway Family Teatime Cycle, offering participants the chance to experience the scenic route in a unique evening setting. Early risers can take part in the Dawn Cycle from the city to Tramore, combining exercise with coastal views at sunrise.
For those interested in culture and art, the Waterford Walls Cycle will guide participants through the city’s famous murals, blending cycling with a creative experience.
Workshops and training opportunities
Alongside organised cycles, Bike Week Waterford 2026 will include a series of practical workshops and talks.
These sessions will cover topics such as bicycle maintenance, social cycling introductions and training opportunities for older adults, ensuring that both experienced cyclists and beginners can take part.
The programme is designed to encourage more people to consider cycling as part of their daily lives, whether for leisure or transport.
National celebration of cycling
Bike Week is a nationwide initiative, with all 31 local authority areas participating through events coordinated with local sports partnerships.
National Transport Authority CEO Anne Shaw said the level of engagement continues to grow each year.
“It’s fantastic to see so many events taking place all around the country. There really is something for everyone this year and I would encourage everybody to get involved,” she said.
Encouraging active lifestyles in the community
Waterford City and County Council says Bike Week Waterford 2026 offers an opportunity for people to explore the local area while enjoying the benefits of cycling.
Bike Week Coordinator Emma Smyth said the programme has been designed to be inclusive and accessible.
“The events are versatile and broad ranging, to suit the young and not so young, and also those who are accomplished cyclists and those new to cycling,” she said.
She added that the week provides a chance to enjoy Waterford’s scenery while getting fresh air and exercise in a safe and welcoming environment.
