RTÉ has paid tribute to veteran broadcaster Áine Lawlor as she presents her final edition of The Week in Politics, bringing the curtain down on a broadcasting career spanning more than four decades.

In a heartfelt tribute shared online, RTÉ praised Lawlor’s contribution to Irish journalism, describing her as one of the country’s most respected broadcasters whose legacy will endure long after her final programme.

‘As she walks out of Studio Three after presenting her last The Week in Politics today, Áine Lawlor can be justifiably proud of her decades-long career at the top of Irish journalism,’ the tribute read.

‘Proud, however, is not something that her colleagues would say she is. Rather, she is regarded as humorous, erudite, appreciative and supportive by colleagues.’

Originally from Coolock, Dublin, Lawlor attended Manor House School in Raheny before studying at Trinity College Dublin, where she served as Students’ Union President.

She joined RTÉ in 1984, beginning a career that would see her become one of Ireland’s best-known political journalists.

Lawlor became a familiar voice to listeners when she joined Morning Ireland in 1995. RTÉ said her ‘sharp intellect and legendary preparedness ensured the listening public were always well informed, even if some interviewees might have been discomforted from time to time.’

Alongside her radio work, she also narrated Mary Raftery’s acclaimed documentary series States of Fear.

In 2011, Lawlor stepped away from Morning Ireland after being diagnosed with breast cancer. She later documented her treatment and recovery in the two-part series Facing Cancer, which RTÉ said prompted widespread public support and gratitude.

Two years later, she took over as presenter of News at One and The Week in Politics – roles she continued in until her final broadcast today.

Reflecting on her time presenting the political programme, RTÉ highlighted several standout moments, including her questioning of the Fianna Fáil candidate during the 2025 presidential election campaign.

The broadcaster said Lawlor’s ‘thorough and clear-eyed approach led to dramatic turns’, noting that her interview was central to Jim Gavin’s decision to withdraw from the race later that day.

While best known for political journalism, RTÉ said Lawlor was equally at home presenting programmes from the National Ploughing Championships, Big Week on the Farm and Bloom Live.

‘Colleagues could see at the heart of Áine was a great grá for people and for celebrating nature,’ the tribute read.

As Lawlor prepares for retirement, RTÉ said she will now have more time to spend with her husband Ian, her family, and tending to her garden and allotment.
