The Group Stages of the 2026 World Cup are coming to an end, with 13 teams already having secured their place in the Round of 32.
For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, there are 48 teams in the competition, split into 12 groups of four, with the top two from each automatically going through to the round of 32, alongside the eight best third-placed finishers, based on points and goal difference at the end of the group stage.
13 teams have already secured their place in the next round, with seven teams having already been eliminated from the competition.

Amongst the teams already qualified for the next round are the three host nations, Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Canada won one game, drew one, and lost one, to finish second in the group, while Mexico and the United States both topped their respective groups.
Some of the tournament’s biggest teams have also laid down their mark, with France, Argentina, Germany, and Brazil all securing their passage to the Round of 32. Brazil won all three of their matches, while the other three teams will advance despite the results of their final games.
Dark horses Norway and Morocco have secured their place too, with Morocco finishing second behind Brazil, with Norway currently second in their group behind France, but can overtake Didier Deschamps’ men if they beat them in the final game.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first team to advance as one of the best third-place finishing teams, thanks to a draw with Canada and a 3-1 victory over Qatar. Colombia, Switzerland, and South Africa are the final three teams to make it through to the knockout rounds.
The seven teams that have been eliminated thus far are Czechia, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan, and Panama.
Czechia not making it out of the group will be a bittersweet feeling for the Irish fans after Heimir Hallgrimsson’s men were tragically knocked out of qualifying by the side. It’s difficult not to think about whether the Republic of Ireland could have done better than the Czechs.
