Waterford FC 2 Derry City 2

Waterford FC battled the dreadful conditions at the RSC to eke out a their second draw in three days in a two all draw with Derry City and in doing so they extended their unbeaten run to thirteen games.

From the opening whistle it was the strong wind that impacted both sides though it was the visitors who made the most of the advantage with a long range effort that broke the deadlock on nine minutes.

Adam O Reilly, who had spent time on loan at the Blues, picked up the ball just inside the Waterford half and decided to unleash an effort from thirty five yards that flew past the diving Stephen McMullan and into the net.

Chances were few and far between with both sides guilty of loose play though they could be forgiven with the wind and rain that poured down on the Kilbarry surface making underfoot conditions very difficult.

Waterford had a gilt edged chance to level matters six minutes before the break when Benny Couto drilled a low ball across the six yard box where it was met by Tommy Lonergan but his effort came bouncing off the goalkeeper Tom Norcott and straight back to the striker but he again fired straight at Norcott and the chance was lost.

However, Couto delivered the free kick that provided the goal on the stroke of half time when he floated a ball to the back post which Hayden Cann touched back into the six yard box where Jorgen Voilas was waiting. His shot was blocked but it fell to Evan McLaughlin who blasted the ball home.

Tommy Lonergan had a huge chance to put the Blues in front straight after the restart when he got behind the Derry defence but a slight hesitation allowed the visitors to get a timely block and the chance was lost.

And moments later, they found themselves behind when Michael Duffy picked up the ball inside the area and cut onto his right before curling the ball to the opposite corner.

The lead lasted just six minutes as another perfect corner from Couto was headed home unchallenged by Padraig Amond.

Waterford kept pressing forward forcing a number of corners and it was Duffy who saved Derry in injury time when he scooped the ball off the line to deny the Blues a winner.
