Rory McIlroy returns to action this week with even more motivation after an extended break following his Masters win.

The Northern Irish man became just the fourth person to win the Masters Championships back-to-back at Augusta last month. McIlroy finds himself in a lucrative club alongside legends of the game, Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, and Jack Nicklaus.

McIlroy is back in action at the Truist Championship in Quail Hollow this week, a place where he has won four times. The grand-slam winner’s first win on the PGA tour came in the Quail Hollow Championship in 2010, when he shot a final-round 62 to win the tournament by four shots.

McIlroy has said he is excited about competing over the coming weeks, with this year’s win at Augusta making him more motivated than ever. He explained how his mentality has shifted from when he won his first Masters in April 2025, compared to after his second win at Augusta last month.

‘I thought winning the Grand Slam was going to be this life-changing thing, and in some ways it was,’ McIlroy said. ‘But, in other ways, I had to remember, no, I still have a lot of my career left. I want to keep playing and keep competing.

‘I’m excited for the road ahead. I’m excited for this week, I’m excited for Aronimink next week, Shinnecock, Birkdale. I feel like, if anything, I’m more motivated after what happened at Augusta this year than I’ve ever been.’

The Holywood man will have plenty more chances to add to his major collection, the first of which comes next week at the PGA Championship in Aronimink. McIlroy last played the course at the 2018 BMW Championship and finished fifth with a score of 18-under par.

McIlroy will be hoping to keep up his form and produce another good week at Quail Hollow. He begins his opening round on Thursday alongside English duo and Ryder Cup teammates, Justin Rose and Matt Fitzpatrick.
