Reigning champions Rathgormack made a strong start to the defence of their JJ Kavanagh & Sons Waterford Senior Football Championship title with a comprehensive victory over Roanmore at Azzurri Walsh Park.

Rathgormack eventually ran out 3-22 to 1-5 winners, although it was Roanmore who made the brighter start.

Eddie Nolan opened the scoring after just two minutes, finding the back of the net for Roanmore before Billy Power added a point shortly afterwards.

Rathgormack settled into the contest with Francie Roach getting them on the scoreboard after eight minutes, while Nolan added another two points for Roanmore, including a two-pointer.

The champions then began to take control, and scores from Conor Murray, Billy Power and Adam Murray, along with a two-pointer from Jason Curry, saw Rathgormack move ahead.

Further points from Power and Murray left Rathgormack in front at the interval, 0-9 to 1-2.

The second half was a completely different story as Rathgormack imposed their authority on proceedings.

The champions were awarded a penalty after Adam Murray was fouled while bearing down on goal, with Roanmore’s Conor Ryan receiving a black card for the foul.

Jason Curry stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sending the ball into the bottom right-hand corner beyond the reach of Josh Sheridan.

Rathgormack continued to dominate and soon added another goal when Francie Roach got onto the end of a ball and brilliantly lobbed Sheridan to find the net.

Billy Power then added Rathgormack’s third goal after Sheridan was caught by a sharp ball, with the Rathgormack forward taking full advantage to lob the Roanmore goalkeeper.

Further points from Conor Murray, Billy Power and Adam Murray completed a commanding second-half performance from the reigning champions.

Rathgormack manager Kenny Hassell was pleased with the result after the game, although he acknowledged there is plenty for his side to work on as they begin their championship defence.

In the end, it was a statement opening-day performance from the champions.
